SD5805NW WALLGATE 24-1/7/115 (West side) Wallgate Station, entrance block

GV II

Railway station booking hall/office block. 1896, by Henry Shelmerdine; replacing original station built 1848. Red brick with red sandstone dressings, slate roof; with porte-cochere of cast-iron and glass. Irregular plan parallel to street and standing back from it, with front canopy and very prominent porte-cochere bridging cobbled forecourt. 2 storeys, 2:3:2 bays, the corners canted back; arcaded ground floor composed of elliptical-headed arches with linking impost bands, entrance arches in the 3-bay centre and windows in the flanking wings; mullioned windows at 1st floor; hipped roofs to wings. Ground floor protected by 5-bay canopy from which projects a tall 3-bay porte-cochere composed of cast-iron columns with arched open-work foliated brackets and glazed roof of 3 hipped spans carried on latticed girders. Forms a noticeable feature of this side of the street.
