Description
54 and 56 Wallgate is a small town house that has been converted into a café. It likely dates from the early 18th century and was later altered in the 19th century for use as a shop. The building features painted brick in Flemish bond on the first floor and has a slate roof. It has a two-unit plan with a back extension and stands two low storeys tall with two windows, topped by a moulded wooden eaves cornice.
The ground floor showcases large 19th-century shop windows, consisting of three and two arched lights, and a recessed entrance on the right. This entrance is flanked by panelled side walls and framed by central and terminal pilasters that feature raised round-headed panels and elaborate consoles adorned with scallops and garlands. These support a prominent modillioned cornice with ball finials at the ends. The upper floor contains horned sashed windows, with the right window featuring stained glass. A large full-width signboard with painted lettering reading "AD POOLES 1847" is mounted on the front slope of the roof.
Inside, the woodwork is designed in a simple early Mackintosh style. The building forms a group with the adjoining No. 52, the Victoria Hotel.
