Description
Nos. 13 and 15 on King Street is a former town house, now used as offices, dating from around 1800. It was altered and enlarged in the mid-19th century and subsequently. The building is constructed of handmade brown brick in Flemish bond, with some sandstone dressings and a slate roof. It has a double-depth plan and a large extension added to the back.
The structure is three storeys high and features three windows on the front. It has a fluted frieze and a cornice with modillions at the eaves. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front, with a doorway to the left. Each upper floor has three sash windows without glazing bars, all with raised sills and wedge lintels. The left return wall also has similar windows with wedge lintels. The rear addition has a convex corner and a blocked round-headed doorway.
Inside, there is a doglegged staircase with scrolled brackets, stick balusters, and Victorian turned newels. Several panelled doors remain in their original surrounds, although other parts of the interior have been altered. This building forms a group with Nos. 7-11, which are adjacent to the right.
