Description

This building is a public house, likely dating from around 1820, and has undergone alterations. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, with some sandstone and buff terracotta dressings, and features a hipped slate roof. The ground floor of the front section is now faced with square tiles and painted. The building has an L-shape on a corner site, encompassing Nos. 27 and 29 Wallgate, as well as Nos. 2, 4, and 6 King Street.

The exterior consists of three storeys and five windows facing Wallgate. It has a plain cornice at the ground floor, a plain frieze, and oversailing eaves. The ground floor features a segmental-headed doorway in the fourth bay, set within a Tuscan doorcase that has a modillioned cornice and blocking course. This doorway is flanked by 12-pane fixed windows with glazed terracotta surrounds, and there is a pilastered "shop" window in the first two bays. The right corner has a splayed 15-pane fixed window. The first floor contains recessed segmental-headed 12-pane sashed windows with stepped surrounds, while the second floor has 9-pane sashes, all of which are unhorned and have projecting sills. The right-hand return to King Street has similar window arrangements on the upper floors, with a doorway flanked by tripartite fixed windows at ground level, and a segmental-headed wagon archway with a rusticated quoined surround beyond these.

Nos. 2, 4, and 6 King Street continue the three-window range, matching the main building except at the ground floor, which features a shop front with a recessed doorway flanked by plate-glass windows and consoles to the fascia. The rear and interior of the building have been altered.
