Description
36 and 38 Market Place are two shops with offices above, built in 1906 by Heaton, Ralph and Heaton. The building is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond, with sandstone dressings and some timber-framing, topped with a red tiled roof. It has a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street and is designed in a 16th-century vernacular style.
The structure is three storeys high and has two bays. The ground floor features two 20th-century shop fronts. On the first floor, there are large rectangular windows with two and three lights, above which is a concave frieze adorned with pseudo triple keystones. The second floor showcases slightly-jettied ornamental timber framing, including shallow canted 8-light oriel windows with leaded glazing. The gables have brattished jetty-bressumers inscribed with "1906" and oversailing bargeboarded verges with finials. The interior has not been inspected.
This building forms part of a group with No. 34 to the left and Nos. 26 to 32, which continue the same architectural scheme.
