Description
The John Bull Chophouse is a public house located on Coopers Row in Wigan. It is likely made up of two cottages and a stable, dating from the 17th century or early 18th century, and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of painted brick with a slate roof and features an elongated single-depth plan, with the domestic section making up about two-thirds of the structure and the former stable to the left.
The building has two storeys and four windows, along with two additional openings inserted at the first floor. The doorways and windows are square-headed, arranged in a rhythm of window-door-window-door-window-window-door. The second and third doorways have painted plain surrounds, with steps leading up to the latter two (both doors have been altered). The former domestic section includes flush-mullion windows with two, two, and three lights at the ground floor, and two, two, and two lights at the first floor. The stable section has two small square windows flanking the doorway, both with run-out lintels, and at the first floor, there is a two-light casement window offset to the left and a rectangular ventilating louvred window to the right, along with a small inserted window to the right of that.
A rebuilt ridge chimney is located at the junction of the two sections. The interior has been altered, but the building remains one of the few surviving examples of 18th-century courtyard development in the center of Wigan.
