Description

Carpenter Hall, located at numbers 38-42, is a building with a mixed stucco frontage that has its origins in the Georgian period, with later alterations from the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The structure features three storeys, a basement, and an attic, flanking a taller four-storey section with a two-window range in the centre, a five-window range to the left, and a four-window range to the right. The ground floor has rusticated pilasters and a channelled finish on the left, while the centre and right sections also have a rusticated ground floor, along with end pilaster strips and a decorative cill band on the first floor. The building is topped with slate roofs and has bracket eaves, as well as rubble and brick chimney stacks.

Pitched roof dormer windows are present, primarily featuring sash glazing. The left-hand range includes alternating full-height splayed bay windows with cornices, and several sash windows, some of which are blocked, adorned with architraves. The central range boasts paired four-storey bay windows with horned sash glazing, small pane upper sashes leading to double doors, and a fine traceried fanlight. The basement has small pane sash windows. The right-hand range also has full-height splayed bay windows in each bay, complete with cornices and aprons featuring swagged plaster panels. Timber half-glazed porches with double doors are located at the second and fourth bays, with sash windows in the basement.

At the rear, the building features small pane sash windows set in a rubble wall with a brick cross range. The interior retains original details, including barley twist columns that support an arch leading to the stairwell, moulded tread ends, acanthus cornices, and bolection moulded doorcases.
