Description
48 Marine Terrace is a three-storey building with a basement and attic, featuring stucco and cement render frontages. The facade has eight windows facing the Marine Hotel and two windows for Nos 47 and 48. The ground floor is channelled, with pilaster strips on the Marine Hotel, and rusticated quoins on Nos 47 and 48. The building has a slate roof with wide bracket eaves and rubble and brick chimney stacks. There are pitched roof dormers with bargeboards on the Marine Hotel and camber-headed slate-hung dormers on Nos 47 and 48. Throughout the building, there are bay windows of varying sizes, all with horned sash glazing, wide cornices, and panelled aprons. Nos 47 and 48 feature glazed porches on the ground floor right, with end pilaster strips on No 48. The Marine Hotel has a modern main entrance, but retains an original entrance to the right, which includes a bowed and twin fluted column Doric doorcase, panelled reveals, and half-glazed doors; a similar entrance has been blocked in the adjacent bay. No 47 has panelled doors.
The rear elevations are made of rubble and include cross ranges with mostly small pane sash windows, featuring exceptionally tall 24-pane staircase windows. A modern extension to the Marine Hotel is not considered of special interest.
Inside the Marine Hotel, the entrance hall retains an ornate cornice with foliage detail and an arched opening to the stairwell. It also features bolection moulded doorcases, panelled doors, and some lettered glass.
