Description

This building is a barn, shippon, and former workshop located to the west of Syke House and farmhouse, dating from the early 19th century. It is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. The barn and shippon on the left were extended by three bays and two storeys, with an additional bay added later. The barn has two opposed segmental-arched cart entries with keystones, and a circular window above. A window with a round-arched head separates the barn from the shippon door. The three-bay workshop has a central door with a square-cut stone surround and segmental-arched head, flanked by windows with wedge lintels. The upper floor and the gable of the central bay feature semi-circular-arched window openings with dropped keystones. The added bay on the right has a ground floor door, a similar window on the first floor, and a hipped roof. The rear of the building is treated similarly, although there is no gable over the central bay and the door has a dressed surround. The front yard is enclosed by walls and a cast-iron fence. Given its architectural features, it is unlikely that this building was solely constructed for farming purposes. The workshop may have been used to process limestone for agricultural and other uses, possibly sourced from glacial deposits in the north. Additionally, the cast-iron trough in the front enclosure may have served as a horse-powered lime press.
