Description
This is a late 18th and early 19th century field barn, consisting of a barn and a shippon (cattle shelter). The barn is constructed of roughly coursed slatestone rubble with dressed quoins and voussoirs above the openings. It has a slate roof with corbelled kneelers and slate copings. Inside the barn, there is a threshing floor to the left of the centre, with an outshut to the right. A slate canopy covers a flat stone arch over the threshing bay. A segmental stone arch frames a small winnowing door to the rear. A timber lintel is above the loft door in the right gable. The shippon is attached further down the slope to the left, with a rear outshut. It features a plank loft door above a segmental-arched door, and two doorways to the rear outshut. The barn’s interior boasts a softwood scissor-braced roof. There is a grease horn recess to the left of the entrance and draft-beam pockets above the threshing floor. A late 19th century drive shaft is found in the outshut, which was formerly an engine house and is now occupied by a winnowing machine. The building is a well-crafted and good example of a South Hams field barn and holds group value as such.
