Description

Mowhalls is a house and shippon located on Mow Halls Lane in Saddleworth, dating from the early to mid 18th century with later alterations. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. It has a total of three bays and two storeys with a single-depth plan.

Bays two and three make up the original structure, which includes a shippon on the right. These bays have quoins, a door with a square-cut surround, a four-light window to the left that incorporates a two-light double-chamfered mullion window, and a five-light recessed flat-faced mullion window to the right, along with two similar five-light windows on the first floor. There is a shippon door at the extreme right. Bay two appears to have been raised in height.

Bay one, likely from the early 19th century, features a blocked door to the right with a square-cut surround, a reused four-light double-chamfered mullion window, and a four-light flat-faced window on the first floor. The building has a ridge chimney stack and a 20th-century extension to the left gable, which includes one and two-light windows. The right gable has 19th-century window openings, while the rear of bay one has a three-light window, with other 20th-century openings to the rear, which was originally the front.

Inside, the building retains a cavetto-moulded fire shelf directly below a forked ceiling beam.
