Description

SADDLEWORTH MOW HALLS LANE SD 9906 (north side) 9/207 Mowhalls - G.V. II House and shippon. Early to mid C18 with later alterations. Hammer-dressed watershot stone with graduated stone slate roof. Total of 3 bays and 2 storeys. Single-depth plan. Bays 2 and 3 constitute the original building including a shippon to right. They have quoins, a door with square-cut surround, a 4-light window to left which incorporates a 2-light double-chamfered mullion window, a 5-light recessed flat- faced mullion window to right and 2 similar 5-light windows on first floor. Shippon door to extreme right. Bay 2 appears to have been raised in height. Bay 1 (probably early C19) has a blocked door to right with square-cut surround, a reused 4-light double-chamfered mullion window and a 4-light flat-faced on the first floor. Ridge chimney stack. C20 extension to left gable which has 1 and 2-light windows. C19 window openings to right gable. 3-light window to rear of bay 1, otherwise C20 openings to rear (which was originally the front). Interior retains a cavetto-moulded fire shelf directly below a forked ceiling beam.
