Description

Woods House is a late 19th-century house located on Sugar Lane in Dobcross, Saddleworth, with a later addition to its right side. The original house is constructed of hammer-dressed, coursed stonework, with the side elevation watershot. It has a graduated stone slate roof. The house follows a three-bay, central-staircase plan, extending over three storeys with an attic and cellars, with a later bay added to the right.

The house and added bay feature corner quoins and an eaves cornice on the main house. A late 19th-century porch with canted sides now fronts the main entrance, partially obscuring a half-glazed and fielded panel door within a dressed stone surround. Bays one and three of the original house have stepped, three-light windows on each floor. These windows have flat-faced stone mullions, dressed frames, and replacement two-light sashes with fixed outer lights. Bay two has sash windows on the upper floors with dressed stone frames and replacement two-light sashes. The roof is punctuated by five roof-lights and has gable chimney stacks. The added bay to the right has a later door and windows to the ground floor, now partially obscured by a porch mirroring the style of the main house's porch. This bay's upper floors contain three-light and two-light windows similar to those in the original house, with flat-faced mullions, dressed frames, replacement sashes, and fixed lights, and it has two roof-lights and a gable chimney stack. A blocked three-light cellar window and a cellar doorway with a deep stone lintel are visible on the southwest side elevation of the main house, alongside a single-light window with a dressed stone frame. The rear elevation features extensions to the lower levels and a horizontal, six-light weavers' window high under the eaves.

The late 19th-century porch has geometric encaustic tiling on the floor. Inside, the main house’s central staircase features a later 19th-century timber balustrade with turned balusters, a heavy newel post with a ball finial, and a swept handrail rising to first-floor level. A modern open-well staircase leads to the attic, and a dog-leg staircase is located in the rear of the added bay, also a modern insertion. Fireplaces in both the main house and the added wing are reproduction or recent replacements. The cellar has stone slabs and stone shelving. The attic space reveals visible collar roof trusses with diagonal struts and iron strapping.
