Description

No. 1 Woods Lane is a former bank premises and shop located in Saddleworth. It dates from the late 18th century and underwent extensive alterations in the 19th century. The building is constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and features a graduated stone slate roof. It consists of two bays and is two stories high, originally built as back-to-back cottages that were combined under a single roof in the 19th century. The building has quoins and a former bank door on the left with a square-cut surround, while the right side has a dressed door surround. The ground floor includes paired sash windows and a shop window, with two sash windows on the first floor. Gable chimney stacks are present, and there is a blocked taking-in door on the right elevation. The premises were used by Buckley Roberts and Co (Saddleworth Bank) from 1813 to 1840, later becoming the Joint Stock Bank, Manchester County Bank, and eventually the National Westminster Bank. The building is included for its group value.
