Description
Nos. 2 (Lane Ends), 4, and 8 on Sandy Lane in Saddleworth are three houses built around 1780 by John and Hannah Smith, with some later additions. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed watershot stone and feature a graduated stone slate roof. They have a double-range plan with three storeys and four bays, with bay 1 being an addition. The original house has a central square-cut door surround, flanked by 4-light double-chamfered stone mullion windows on each floor, although the ground and first floors are rendered. The first and second floors also have central 2-light windows. Bay 1 includes a square-cut door surround and a 19th-century window on the ground floor, with 4-light windows above. There are three ridge chimney stacks. The rear of No. 8 features a central door and similar 4 and 2-light windows on each of its two floors.
