Description

Nos. 7 to 13 on Millgate Lane are a row of four small cottages, including one shop, built in the early to mid 19th century. The cottages are constructed of brick painted white and topped with a slate roof. They have a rectangular double-depth plan, with each cottage being single-fronted and two storeys high. The row features a four-window range, with round-headed doorways at each end and a coupled entrance in the center, all accessed by one step and having blind overlights. Cottage number 13 has a small rectangular bay window with multi-pane glazing and a pentice roof, while the other cottages have 16-pane unhorned sash windows with raised sills. The ground floor windows have flat-arched heads, while the upper windows have heads that sit under the eaves. There are ridge chimney stacks at the junctions of the pairs of cottages. The facade of number 11 was damaged by a falling tree during the survey and has since been rebuilt. The rear of the cottages is similar but has been slightly altered. The interior was not inspected. These cottages are comparable to numbers 15 and 17 further down the lane, which share a similar social type but have a contrasting form.
