Description
A row of ten cottages, numbered 1-19, located on Church Street in Southwold, dating to the late 18th century with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The cottages are built of colourwashed brick, with number 1 having a pebbledashed exterior; they have pantile roofs and five brick ridge stacks.
The cottages are generally one storey with a dormer attic, each being two or three bays wide. Most fronts feature a plank door and a single four- or five-light casement window to one side. Each cottage also has a dormer window in the roof, fitted with 20th-century casements. Cottages number 3 and 5 have central plank doors flanked by windows with horned sashes and glazing bars. Cottages number 7, 9, and 11 have gabled dormers with three-light casements. A dentil and saw-toothed brick cornice is visible along the eaves. Number 1, at the corner, has been altered with the insertion of plate glass shop windows on both frontages. The right return features a shaped gable.
The interior of the cottages was not inspected during the listing process. The group value of this row of cottages lies in their contribution to the character of Church Street and the wider historic landscape of Southwold.
