Description

This milestone, located on Warrington Road in Penketh, dates from the late 19th century. It is made of whitewashed stone and features a triangular shape with a downward sloping top. The lettering on the milestone indicates 'PENKETH' at the top, 'TO WIDNES TOWN HALL 3 3/4 MILES' on the left side, and 'TO WARRINGTON MARKETGATE 3 MILES' on the right side. The milestone was erected between 1882 and 1894-1896. It is notable for marking distances to buildings rather than places, highlighting its significance in the area's transport history and the evolution of road patterns.
