Description
The war memorial located on St Mary's Road in Great Sankey was erected in the early 1920s to honor the men from the local parish who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. It is constructed from smooth and textured concrete and features an octagonal column set on a trapezoidal base, with an octagonal plinth topped by a Celtic cross. The memorial is enclosed by a low wall that forms a semi-circular area, with two gate piers on the north side.
The octagonal plinth has a trapezoidal base that includes shallow alcoves on each side. On the north elevation, there is a bronze plaque that reads, "This monument is erected to the glory of God and in grateful remembrance of the men of this parish who in the Great War sacrificed their own lives that we might live in freedom," along with the names of 40 men. A second plaque at the foot of the base commemorates those who died in the Second World War, listing 33 names beneath the inscription.
This memorial serves as a significant focal point within the burial ground, commemorating the sacrifices made by local men during both World Wars. It holds considerable historical importance and is listed at Grade II.
