Description

The sundial located south-east of the porch in St Mary's Churchyard is a Grade II listed structure dating from 1721. It features a copper dial and gnomon mounted on a circular cement baluster, which is likely from the 19th century. The baluster is set on a hexagonal stone memorial base that marks the resting place of 59 members of the Birchall Broadhurst, Domville, Deakin, Forster, Garnett, Gorse, Goulden, Green, Greenhalgh, Haddock, Hewitt, Holden, Humphreys, Isherwood, Lamb, Lee, Leigh, Seed, and Yould families, who passed away between 1741 and 1903. The dial bears the inscription "Ab hoc momento pendet AETERNITAS P.Simpson (?) 1721."
