Description

The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building located on Liverpool Road in Great Sankey. It was originally built in 1769 and underwent alterations in the 19th century. The chancel was added in 1883 by W Owen, while the tower, belfry, and spire were constructed or rebuilt between 1868 and 1869. The church features stone-dressed brown brick set on a sandstone plinth, topped with a slate roof.

The structure includes an aisleless nave with three bays and a west tower made of brick, which has recessed corners and a clock on each face. The tower supports an octagonal louvred timber belfry beneath a lead-roofed spire adorned with a gilt ball. The battlemented nave is fitted with three-light windows that likely date from the mid-19th century and feature simple panel tracery, while the east window has full panel tracery. There are small two-light windows flanking the chancel and a gabled south porch.

Inside, the church boasts four arch-braced trusses and a Tudor chancel arch. The pews were installed in 1883. There are four memorial windows in the nave, dating from 1886 and 1889 on the south side, and from 1906 and by Jones and Wallis on the north side. Additionally, there is a monument to Rev. Edward Lloyd, who died in 1813, featuring a putto beside an urn made of white marble on a dark background.
