Description
No 78-80 Chester Road is a symmetrical pair of villa houses built around the 1830s, featuring stucco exteriors. No 78 has a grey Welsh slate roof, while No 80 has had its roof replaced with concrete tiles. Both houses have hipped roofs and pediment gables at the front, along with three-sided bays for the front dining rooms. The windows are adorned with moulded stucco architraves, some of which have round-headed arches and stucco keystones. The principal windows are double-hung Georgian-style recessed sashes, although some have had their glazing bars removed. Rectangular stuccoed chimneys are present, and the wide entrance doors have two vertical panels. No 78 retains its original character, while No 80 has been altered at the rear with modern windows in changed openings. The interior of No 78 features an open string staircase with a mahogany handrail and painted square balusters, folding panelled internal shutters for the hall and front windows, simple moulded plaster cornices in the hall, dining room, and breakfast room, four-panel internal doors, and a cellar with a brick floor. The interior of No 80 has been modernised.
