Description
Holmston Hall Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse with later 17th century additions, located in Little Budworth, near Oulton Lowe. The farmhouse is constructed of red English garden wall bond brick with red sandstone ashlar dressings, and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high with an attic. The front has a stone plinth and stone quoins to the left-hand end, and a stone cyma-moulded string course above the second floor. The front is comprised of two distinct builds, with gables at both the right and left sides which feature stone kneelers, coping stones, and finials. A 19th century porchway is located to the left of centre, containing a 17th century door with nailhead decoration, large strap hinges, and a ring door handle. All the windows are of 19th century date, including two cambered-headed casement windows to the ground floor right. To the left of the ground floor is a 3-light casement window, fitted into a larger, partially blocked basket-arched opening. The first floor has a 3-light casement window to the left, set into a partly blocked basket-arched opening, mirroring the ground floor. Central 2-light casements and a single 3-light casement window are positioned at the right. The attic has 2-light windows in the left gable and a 3-light window in the right gable. The rear elevation is rendered with stucco and includes a 20th century outshut to the right and a large chimney breast to the left of centre. Internally, the dining room and sitting room feature chamfered ceiling beams. The sitting room also has a wide inglenook fireplace and small framing detail to the stairwell.
