Description

The Old Post Office Cottage is a Grade II listed building located in Waverton, dating from the early 18th century. Originally a cottage and shippon, it was extended in the late 18th century and features a late 19th-century porch and rear extension. The structure is made of rendered brick, with the original house having a thatched roof, while the extensions are covered with Welsh slate. It has one gable brick chimney and a two-room plan that includes a later-added shippon and hayloft. The cottage has a two-storey, four-bay front, with a buttress at the right end and a plain band at the first floor. Windows are wooden casements, with two and three lights, and the upper ones are partially covered by the thatch. The brick gabled porch has a tiled roof and an exposed pegged truss, with a door set beneath a segmental brick head. Inside, there is a lobby upon entry. To the left, a room features a heavy chamfered beam with a tongue stop and a flat inglenook fireplace. A central winder staircase leads to a bedroom with heavy exposed purlins. The two-stall shippon retains a tethering post along with exposed beams and joists.
