Description

Church House Farmhouse is a farmhouse built around 1880 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster. It is constructed of orange brick in English garden wall bond with muted diapering, featuring red sandstone dressings. The roof is covered with red tiles and has stone copings, kneelers, and finials, along with three brick chimneys. The building has a three-storey, three-bay north front with a stone plinth, quoins, and moulded bands at the sill and lintel levels. There is a dentil brick band at the top storey, and the central bay features a projecting gabled three-storey porch with a basket-arched stone entrance that has moulded imposts. Behind the entrance is a half-glazed door and panels, with a three-light stone mullion window above. The left end bay has pairs of similar windows on the ground and first floors, and a single window in a coped gabled dormer above. The right side has simpler fenestration. All windows are adorned with applied lead glazing. At the rear, there is an extensive service range. Inside, the room to the left of the entrance has an oak fire surround and a panelled fitted dresser, along with four-panelled doors. There is also a cheese oven with steel doors behind the kitchen fireplace. This farmhouse is an interesting neo-vernacular design, notable for its unusually sombre detailing for Douglas.
