Description
The Church of St Peter is a Grade II* listed building located in Waverton. The church features a 16th-century tower, with the aisles and nave roof dating from the early to mid-17th century. It underwent restoration and additions in 1845 and 1888 by architect John Douglas, during which the clerestorey was rebuilt. Constructed from ashlar Waverton red sandstone, it has a Lakeland green slate roof.
The church has a three-bay nave and a one-bay chancel, with continuous north and south aisles. The three-stage west tower is characterized by angle buttresses and a prominent four-centred arched west doorway, which features arms in the spandrels beneath a label mould with figure stops. The central figure is seated on a hood mould, flanked by the arms of the Dutton and Hatton families. The tower also includes a four-light Perpendicular window from 1888, a square opening with a quatrefoil, and a louvred three-light bell opening in the top stage, all beneath an embattled parapet.
Inside, the entry leads into a re-opened tower porch that contains plaques commemorating the restorations. A tall tower arch supported by applied hexagonal piers opens into the nave, which features three-bay arcades on octagonal piers. The restored hammer-beamed roof, dated 1635, includes carved brackets and pendants, with dentilled arrises to the arch braces and window-braced purlins. The contemporary lean-to aisle roofs exhibit similar decorative treatment. The chancel is timber framed internally, possibly imitating the original design, and contains notable fittings from the late 19th to early 20th centuries, including a memorial pulpit from 1903 dedicated to the 1st Duke of Westminster. Additionally, there is a detailed board of customary table of tithes located in the porch.
