Description
The walls, gatepiers, and gates surrounding the churchyard of St Peter date from the 19th century, although some parts may be older. The late 19th-century gates are made of ashlar red sandstone. The structure forms a nearly complete circuit around the churchyard, with a gap leading to the new burial ground. The low wall along the street features a triangular coping, while the rest of the walls have a semi-circular coping. The walls curve into a gateway in front of the west door of the church. The square gatepiers have chamfered edges and are topped with a moulding beneath a pyramidal cap and finial. The pair of iron gates has vertical spears with lancets at the top of the panels, along with a lockrail that includes quatrefoils and dogbars, which also feature similar lancet heads. This structure is listed for its group value.
