Description

LITTLE LEIGH C.P. TRENT AND MERSEY CANAL SJ 67 NW 6041 7625 2/48 Willowgreen Bridge (Canal bridge No.208) - - II

Canal accommodation bridge: early/mid C19 for the Trent and Mersey Canal Co. Washed English garden wall bond purple-red brick. Bridge abutments carry slightly cambered cast-iron I-beams on stone pads. These have the foundry name T.SHORE & SONS ENGINEERS HANLEY STAFFS. Above is a plain parapet with a rounded brick coping. The bridge ends in pilasters with stone caps. Under the roadway are shallow barrel vaults of opus signinum, carried by the I-beams.

This form of construction was introduced in the early C19 for fire proofing factories and is unusual in a canal engineering context.
