Description

The Trent and Mersey Canal Bridge Number 60, located off Church Lane, is a canal accommodation bridge dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with stone coping and features a single span with a towpath. The bridge has a segmental headed arch and swept wings that end in piers at all four corners. It is built into the stone banks of a cutting, with the lower sections of the abutments made from a mix of hewn stone and brick, especially noticeable on the towpath side. There are some minor brick repairs, and part of the coping has been replaced with concrete. The Trent and Mersey Canal was built between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall.
