Description
This milestone, dating from around 1830, is located on the towpath 30 meters south of canal bridge number 25 in Adlington. It is a heavy rectangular sandstone block with a shaped top. The south face displays the inscription "From ....... 7 Miles," while the opposite side reads "From ....... 19 1/4 Miles" in a well-crafted serif font. During the Second World War, the names of Marple and Hall Green, which mark the ends of the canal, were intentionally removed to mislead German parachutists. This milestone represents a common style found along this canal, with simpler distance stones located between them. An example of such a stone can be found south of canal bridge number 19 in Adlington.
