Description

Canal bridge number 26 was built around 1830 by William Crosley for the Macclesfield Canal Company. It is constructed from hammer-dressed buff sandstone and is positioned at an acute angle to the canal. This design features a broad horseshoe elliptical arch, with the stones in the vault laid diagonally. The bridge has chamfered coping at road level and a plain parapet with rounded coping that ends in square pilasters. There is also a ramp at the south-west corner. Due to its skewed construction, this bridge is visually more attractive than standard canal bridges.
