Description
The Training Centre and Stores at Alderley Park, originally built as stables and outbuildings, dates from 1815 and 1838 for Sir J T Stanley. It is constructed of English garden wall bond orange brick with buff sandstone dressings, featuring a hipped Welsh slate roof, a stone ridge, and one brick chimney. The building has an L-shaped plan that forms two sides of a courtyard.
The east front of the west range is two storeys high with 12 bays. It has a stone plinth and a stone band at the first floor. A near central driftway features a segmental brick arch with a stone-coped triangular pediment above, which holds a plaque inscribed with "JTS MJS 1815." The lower windows consist of 30 panes under cambered brick heads, while the upper windows are 20-pane sashes. There are also two glazed doors.
The north range is similar but has a blocked driftway, and its plaque reads "JTS MJS 1838." At the rear of the east range, there is a high stone wall connecting to a five-bay former corn barn located in the second courtyard. This barn has a stone plinth and stone quoins, topped with a Kerridge stone-slate roof. It features opposed central cart entrances with heavy wooden lintels and lean-to porches in front. The side bays have tall semi-circular headed recesses that contain circular pitch holes with stone sills above diamond pattern ventilation holes.
