Description
This pair of farm buildings was constructed around 1760 for the Stanley-Massey family. They are built from red brick in Flemish and English garden wall bond and feature hipped roofs made of Welsh slate. The buildings are arranged in two ranges on either side of a courtyard, connected by brick walls.
The west range has a symmetrical, two-storey, eight-bay front facing northwest. It has an ashlar red sandstone plinth and a simple brick cornice. The windows have cambered heads and consist of flush 12-pane sashes with heavy glazing bars and stone sills. There is an inserted doorway at the right end. The two-storey, five-bay southeast front includes two original doorways on the left, a large central opening that has been added, and an opening on the right with steel lintels. Steps lead to the upper storey, which features two circular pitch holes, three inserted loading bays, and diamond-shaped ventilation patterns. Inside, the brick partition walls have large semi-circular headed openings in the upper storey, and the sash windows are blocked off.
The east range has a two-storey, five-bay front facing northwest, with a brick cornice. There is a line of altered original doorways below and two circular pitch holes along with four inserted openings above. The left end has been modernly reconstructed. The interior of this range is noted as being of no interest. The west range was originally built as a wing of the now-demolished Puddington Hall, with a facade designed to conceal its agricultural use.
