Description
The gate piers, wing walls, and gates located to the southeast of Matthews Nursery were constructed around 1820 for Sir J T Stanley. They are made from buff sandstone ashlar, with wrought iron gates. The forward gate piers feature channelled rusticated bodies set on simple moulded plinths, topped with projecting moulded capstones. These piers are positioned at the ends of low, curving wing walls that have cyma-moulded coping. The side gates, which are similar to the main gates, include spears, a lockrail, and speared dog bars. The central main gates are flanked by similar piers that display a carved Stanley crest on the front and spread eagles on the capstones, accompanied by a pair of gates matching the side gates.
