Description

This is an early 19th century dovecote, originally built for Sir J T Stanley and now used as a store. The building is constructed of irregular bond orange brick with buff sandstone dressings. It has a pyramidal roof covered in Kerridge stone-slate. The dovecote is tall and hexagonal in plan, with a stone plinth, rusticated quoins and a modillion cornice. Each face features a circular hole, now either glazed or blocked, surrounded by ashlar and with a keystone at each cardinal point. The apex of the roof has an open wooden bellcote topped with a weathervane. Inside, the brickwork contains tiers of nesting holes, each with a projecting brick ledge, numbering over 400.
