Description
Fernhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the early 17th century, likely built for Sir Thomas Stanley. It underwent extensive rebuilding in the late 18th century and early 19th century, along with three small additions from the 20th century. The structure features English garden wall bond orange brick, with parts made of Kerridge stone-slate and a roof covered in Welsh slate, topped with three brick chimneys. The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan and is two stories tall with an attic, presenting a three-bay north front. The windows are three-light casements set under segmental rough brick heads, and there is a door located behind a 20th-century extension. Other facades display similar brick heads, with some featuring mullioned and transomed wooden windows fitted with iron casements.
Inside, there is a cambered, chamfered fire beam with a stone heck, and the ceiling beams are sawn and raised. A notable feature is the 2½-storey dog-leg staircase from the 17th century, which has reeded square newels, shaped flat balusters, and a moulded handrail. Some doors are made of three boards and have iron strap hinges. The heavy purlins and ridge are visible, and upstairs, there are remains of a brick hood over a fire, in front of which rests a massive stone flag acting as a hearthstone, supported by the ceiling beams.
