Description
The Over Knutsford War Memorial is a sandstone structure approximately 3 meters tall, located in a small raised garden that overlooks the main road, about 60 meters southeast of the Church of St Cross, which is listed at Grade II*. The memorial features a fleur-de-lis cross with a moulded foot that rises from an octagonal shaft. The moulded foot is set on a square, tapering plinth, which stands on a three-stepped square base. The raised garden is surrounded by a stone wall, and there are steps leading from the pavement to the front of the memorial.
On the front face of the plinth, there is an inscription that reads: "IN GRATEFUL REMEMBERANCE OF THE MEN CONNECTED WITH THIS PARISH WHO DIED FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914 – 1918. THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." Above this inscription, a Greek cross is carved in low relief. The names of the men who fell in the First World War are incised on the two side faces of the memorial.
