Description

The Claygate War Memorial is located in a small memorial garden to the north of the Church of Holy Trinity, facing Church Street. It features a stone fleur-de-lys cross on an octagonal, tapering shaft that stands approximately 5 meters high. The center of the cross has a carved quatrefoil, and there are four Gothic style arches marking the transition from the cross to the shaft, each containing a blind trefoil. The shaft has a moulded foot that rests on an octagonal plinth.

The names of those who died are incised and painted on four sides of the plinth, which has protruding rectangular alcoves. The other four sides of the plinth are designed with bell-shaped concaves, leading to a general dedication in raised Gothic style lettering at the base. The inscription reads: "TO THE MEMORY/ OF THE MEN/ OF THIS VILLAGE/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE." The plinth is set on a two-stepped octagonal base.

The memorial garden is bordered by hedges on three sides and a railing along the pavement. In front of the memorial, there is a plaque that commemorates its restoration, which took place from 1952 to 2012, to mark the Diamond Jubilee of the accession of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the centenary of the outbreak of World War I in 1914.
