Description
Brook Street Unitarian Chapel is a Unitarian chapel built in 1689. It is constructed of brick with a stone-flagged roof and has a single-celled plan that is expressed externally as a two-storey building. The exterior features a range of six windows, with outer entrances in shallow segmental arches beneath external staircases on either side, leading to upper doorways that access the gallery. The chapel has 2-light mullioned windows throughout, with four on the ground floor, where the chamfered mullions and surrounds are rendered over and feature flat brick hoodmoulds. There are also two single-light windows centrally located between the storeys.
Inside, the chapel is accessed from a lobby to the southwest, which was screened off from the main chapel in the early 18th century. The main body of the chapel includes a gallery that runs around three sides, with the pulpit located in the center of the long wall, positioned between the additional windows that likely provide light for it. There is a short communion rail in front of the pulpit and a font opposite. The pulpit, which may date from the late 17th or early 18th century, is polygonal with heavy panelling, a curved stair, and a splayed base. The gallery features splat balusters and panelled pews, supported by chamfered timber posts. The pews in the lower storey were added in 1859.
Historically, the chapel is associated with the writer Elizabeth Gaskell, who attended as a child and is buried in the churchyard.
