Description

This is a milepost, likely from the early 19th century, made of cast iron. The cylindrical post features a curved plate that is inscribed with the distances to various locations: CHURCH LAWTON 6 1/2 MILES, NEWCASTLE 13 MILES, HOLMES CHAPEL 2 MILES, KNUTSFORD 10 MILES, WARRINGTON 21 MILES, and LIVERPOOL 40 MILES, all displayed in raised sans serif capitals. The post also includes the maker's mark, W H SMITH AND CO: MAKER: WHITCHURCH, in an oval pattern. This milepost served as a turnpike marker.
