Description
The Church of St Oswald is a Grade II* listed church located in Brereton Green, dating from around 1500 and restored in 1903. It is constructed of red sandstone and features a nave, aisles, an embraced west tower, a south porch, and a chancel. The three-stage west tower has a replaced door, a four-light panel-traceried west window, a small rectangular opening for the ringers' chamber, and two-light bell-openings on each face. It is topped with crenellation and four pinnacles, and has square buttresses at the west corners and one on the north and south at the east corners.
The nave and chancel are adorned with basket-arched windows, including six two-light windows on each side of the clerestory, three three-light windows on each aisle, one three-light window on each side of the chancel, and a five-light east window. The nave and aisles have plain parapets, while the chancel features crenellation.
Inside, the nave consists of four bays plus a tower bay, with simple arcades. The nave roof is a camber-beam panelled design, with a deep panelled truss between the nave and chancel, and three cambered beams in the chancel. There is a tablet commemorating William Brereton on the north wall of the chancel, and an octagonal font from 1660. The east window contains mid-19th century glass, while the west window features glass from 1853 by Wailes. Additionally, there is a monument to William and Frances Smethwicke, which includes half-length figures and dates from 1643. This church is noted for being an unusually complete example of late Perpendicular architecture.
