Description

The Bear's Head Hotel is a historic hotel located on Newcastle Road in Brereton, dating back to 1615 with extensions from the 18th century, 19th century, and late 20th century. The building features an oak frame with painted brick nogging and a graded stone slate roof, along with a brick-walled wing on the left side. It stands two storeys tall with blank attics.

The 18th-century left wing has three windows and a six-panel door, with the lower panels flush, set in a pediment porch supported by brackets. Above the door is a blocked window opening, and there are two 16-pane flush casements on each storey to the left. The left gable end has two blocked window openings on each storey and two semi-circular blocked openings in the attic. Part of the left bay of the oak-framed section has been rebuilt in a way that superficially matches the original but features false framing.

The four early 17th-century bays display close studding on a sandstone plinth, with a rail positioned slightly below the first floor but no rail at the first floor level. There is an intermediate rail in the upper storey. The left bay includes a door with six fielded panels beneath an added lean-to porch, topped by a blank jettied gable. The second bay features a canted Georgian bay window, while the third bay has a two-storey jettied porch with decorative panels inscribed with "1615:WM." The fourth bay has a jettied gable end with a blocked lower window, an oriel window on consoles in the upper storey, and herringbone struts in the gable. A 19th-century blue brick diagonal-flue ridge chimney adds to the building's character, creating an attractive informal ensemble.

Inside, the hotel boasts four ovolo beams spanning from front to back and two spanning side to side in the right room. The posts are of large section, and the beams rest on oak consoles. The private upper rooms are reported to have similar beams and posts.
