Description

This is a milepost, likely from the early 19th century, made of cast iron. The cylindrical post features a curved plate that is inscribed with the distances to various locations: CHURCH LAWTON 5 1/2 MILES, NEWCASTLE 12, HOLMES CHAPEL 3 MILES, KNUTSFORD 11, WARRINGTON 22, and LIVERPOOL 41, all presented in raised sans serif capitals. Additionally, the post bears the inscription in an oval pattern: W H SMITH & CO: MAKER: WHITCHURCH. This milepost served as a turnpike marker.
