Description

This is a milepost located on Newcastle Road in Brereton, likely dating from the early 19th century. It is made of cast iron and features a cylindrical post topped with a curved plate. The plate is inscribed with the distances: "BRERETON 1 MILE; CHURCH LAWTON 7 1/2; NEWCASTLE 14." The mileages to Holmes Chapel, Knutsford, Warrington, and Liverpool are not fully visible. The post also bears the maker's mark "W H SMITH AND CO: MAKER: WHITCHURCH" in an oval pattern. This milepost served as a turnpike marker.
