Description

A water-powered corn mill and attached cottage, dating from circa 1840. The building is constructed of brown brick with a clay tile roof. The mill is two storeys high facing Mill Lane, which crosses the dam, rising to three storeys at the rear. It features a boarded door in a rebated camber-arched opening, and four small-pane casements within camber-arched openings in the lower storey facing the lane. The upper storey has five Gothick cast iron casements and a boarded loading door with a hoist above. A tapered square chimney is located at the north-east corner. The rear elevation includes boarded double doors, various casements to the lower two storeys, and six Gothick cast iron windows with inset opening lights to the upper storey. A large, disused iron breastwheel remains, along with its full train of machinery. The attached cottage, included for group value, has altered fenestration, but retains its unaltered openings facing the lane. A cornmill in Brereton manor is referenced in the Domesday Book.
