Description
Sound County Primary School is a village school and schoolmaster's house built in 1876, with some later alterations. It features red and blue bricks and a blue tile roof. The building consists of a 3-bay single storey section and a 1-bay 2-storey linked gabled schoolmaster's house. There is a projecting plinth with a blue-brick weathered top course. The school entrance has a boarded door with strap hinges and a shouldered lintel, along with a small rectangular light above, all under a lean-to roof. The porch walls on either side have blue brick offsets. The windows are stepped, 3-light mullion and transom types, with metal lights and Gothic heads in gabled half dormers topped with terra-cotta finials. A weathered sill band runs along the building. Atop the ridge is a bell-turret, which has a base clad in small slates, a steep pyramid roof made of cedar shingles, and a weather vane. There is also a diagonally set square mid-slope stack over the front entrance. The Headmaster's House features ovolo moulded terra-cotta mullion windows with metal casements, a blue-brick weathered band at the first floor, and a stepped gable feature below the verge. The ridge tiles are unperforated and crested. Inside, the school has been mostly modernized but retains arch braced roof trusses.
