Description
This building is a barn, shippon, and stables located 30 metres east of Moston Manor Farmhouse, dating from around 1690 and the mid-18th century. It is constructed of brown brick in English garden wall bond and features a clay tile roof on the barn, which forms the left wing of a two-storey U-shaped block. The roof covering of the shippon and stables has been replaced with cement tiles.
The barn, likely built around 1690, has boarded doors with camber-arched heads and large double doors leading to the threshing floor. There is a first-floor band raised above the threshing-door arch, and blocked loophole vents on both storeys. An inserted casement window is found in the lower storey of the gable, while the upper storey and roof space have two superimposed loading doors.
The shippon and stables also feature boarded doors with camber-arched heads, along with a driftway in the corner against the stable wing, which has a cambered oak lintel to the yard and a brick basket-arch at the rear. Hopper casements are located under cambered heads, and there are two rows of vents in alternating diamond and split-diamond patterns.
The interiors are spacious, showcasing oak purlins and queen-post trusses, with broad round-arched openings in the cross-walls of the shippon loft. This large-scale farm building remains largely unaltered, except for the roof covering of the shippon.
