4/41 Barn c.20 metres north of Higher Whitehalgh Farmhouse - GV II

Barn, probably C17, with later additions including 3 coach houses. Coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, stone slate roof. Six bays with outshut coach houses to front of the 4th, 5th and 6th, lean-to cowsheds to the rear. Wagon doorway to 3rd bay has canopy on cheek to the left (extended) and an outshut to right, which has a sliding bulldoor and a rounded corner. This outshut has 3 wagon doorways (now all reduced in width) with exceptionally large lintels, the first of which, covering 2 doorways, is c. 7 metres long (but now cracked): all these said to have served coaches travelling old road from Manchester to Clitheroe, and the 3rd, which has several cupboard recesses in the inner wall, used for maintenance. At right end of barn are 2 stables with original stalls, and tackle pegs in the beams. Interior: roof of fishbone- strutted kingpost trusses, all to right of threshing bay original (others renewed); entirely lofted except for threshing bay.
