Description

This barn, located approximately 20 metres north of Higher Whitehalgh Farmhouse, is likely from the 17th century and has later additions, including three coach houses. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof. The barn consists of six bays, with the coach houses positioned at the front of the 4th, 5th, and 6th bays, and lean-to cowsheds at the rear.

The third bay has a wagon doorway with a canopy extending to the left and an outshut to the right, which includes a sliding bulldoor and a rounded corner. This outshut contains three wagon doorways, all of which have been reduced in width, and feature exceptionally large lintels. The first lintel, which covers two doorways, measures approximately 7 metres long but is now cracked. These doorways are said to have served coaches on the old road from Manchester to Clitheroe. The third doorway has several cupboard recesses in the inner wall, which were used for maintenance.

At the right end of the barn, there are two stables that retain their original stalls and tackle pegs in the beams. Inside, the roof features fishbone-strutted kingpost trusses, with the original trusses located to the right of the threshing bay, while others have been renewed. The barn is entirely lofted except for the threshing bay.
