Description

Higher Whitaker Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It has been altered and enlarged over time and is now used as a house. The building is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins on the original section and features a slate roof with one chimney on the ridge and another at the right gable. Originally, the farmhouse had two bays with an end baffle entry, and a third bay was added to the right end. There is also a cottage or stable at the left end, which is connected to other farm buildings at right angles that are not included in this listing.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with the current entrance located in a single-storey gabled porch at the front of the third bay, which has one window on each floor. The jambstones of an old doorway can still be seen at the right end of the second bay. To the left, there are two windows on each floor, all originally designed with three lights and chamfered flush mullions, but they have since been replaced with casements. The present ridge chimney is situated at the junction of the two bays. At the rear, there is a lean-to outshut attached to the second bay. The interior has been altered, and an owl hole, which is now covered, is visible on the gable of the barn and appears to be inscribed with "J S 16??".
