Description

The Church of St Peter, built between 1849 and 1850 by J.E. Gregan, is a Grade II listed building located on Rivington Road in Belmont. Constructed from sandstone and topped with a slate roof, the church is designed in the Early English style. It features a west tower with a spire, a nave flanked by north and south aisles, and a chancel with side offices.

The three-stage tower is accentuated by angle buttresses, a moulded arched west doorway, and a two-light window above it. The third stage is set back and includes two-light belfry openings on each side, a Lombard frieze at the parapet, pinnacles at the corners, and a broached spire with lucarnes on three levels. The six-bay nave and aisles are complemented by a gabled porch on the south side, which has a moulded arched doorway with a hoodmould. The aisles are supported by buttresses and feature two-light plate-traceried windows, while the nave is adorned with pilaster strips and clerestory windows that alternate between quatrefoil and cinquefoil designs, both having dentils at the eaves. Notably, the first bay of the south aisle, designated as the baptistry, contains a three-light window. The east window consists of three lights with multifoils in the head.

Inside, the nave arcade is formed of short octagonal columns with moulded caps that support double-chamfered two-centred arches. The chancel arch mirrors this design with similar shafts. The roof features an arch-braced kingpost structure supported by hammerbeams. Additionally, there is an octagonal marble font with a shafted pedestal and intricately carved panels, topped with an ornately carved wooden cover, and an organ is situated in the tower arch.
