Description
The monument on the corner of Maria Square, dated 1907, commemorates Section 13 of the Bolton Corporation Act 1905, which ensured the continued supply of water to Belmont. It is constructed of ashlar and features a low square pedestal with inverted consoles mounted diagonally on the corners. This pedestal supports a tapered and chamfered pier topped with a pyramidal cap and a ball. The face of the pier is inscribed with extensive quotations from the Act, stating that the Corporation "shall cause to flow out of that (Belmont) reservoir into the Eagley Brook as compensation ... a supply of water at the rate of 1,758,000 gallons during 12 hours of every day (Sundays, Good Fridays and Christmas Days only excepted) ... between 5 o'clock in the morning and 5 o'clock in the afternoon ...". It also notes that "This protection for Belmont was only obtained after a strenuous fight in both Houses of Parliament ...". The pedestal bears the inscription: "SEE TO THE ABOVE PATRIMONY BEING PRESERVED IN ITS ENTIRETY AND IN PERPETUITY EDWARD DEAKIN MARCH 1907."
